NOTE on the nature of John's language:

The gospel passages from the four Gospels and especially John's Gospel refer to "the Jews" as a whole as opponents of Jesus and those who caused his death.  Throughout the history of Christianity these passages have been used to  justify hatred, terrorizing, and murder of Jewish people.  I have read these passages as we find them in the text of the Gospels but I encourage you to mentally substitute a more precise understanding of "the Jews" such as the phrase  "Judean leaders" or the "religious leaders".
